Vangelis Liolios vows to stay in office until Greek basketball is cleansed

Vangelis Liolios, President of the Hellenic Basketball Federation (EOK), held an accountability and programmatic press conference to discuss his five-year tenure and future goals. Liolios stated he will not step down until he has “cleansed” Greek basketball of past irregularities. He addressed several controversial topics, including his past management of the national team regarding Vassilis Spanoulis and the safety and insurance costs associated with NBA star Giannis Antetokounmpo.

The conference drew significant criticism from media organizations. The Panhellenic Association of Sports Journalists (PSAT) and the Journalists' Union of Athens (ESHEA) condemned the EOK's decision to invite only six journalists to the event. They argued that this selective approach undermines press freedom, professional ethics, and the public's right to information, describing the practice as an attempt to bypass critical scrutiny.

During the session, Liolios also defended his leadership against allegations of corruption, noting that legal investigations into the federation have yielded no criminal findings. He emphasized his commitment to breaking old systems of dependency within the sport.
