Colombia earthquake forces suspension of CONMEBOL tournament matches

CONMEBOL has suspended upcoming Copa Libertadores and Copa Sudamericana matches in Colombia following a devastating 7.4 magnitude earthquake. The seismic event, centered in the Chocó department, has caused significant casualties, with reports indicating at least 111 to 132 deaths and hundreds of injuries.

Specific matches affected include the Copa Libertadores round of 16 fixture between Deportes Tolima and Independiente del Valle in Ibagué, and the Copa Sudamericana match between Independiente Santa Fe and River Plate in Bogotá. CONMEBOL stated the suspension is necessary to “preserve the safety of all” and show respect for the victims.

In addition to international club competitions, Dimayor has postponed domestic professional football matches in Colombia to allow clubs to support affected communities. The Colombian government has declared a national state of emergency as rescue operations continue in heavily impacted regions, including Pereira and other western cities.
