Pan's Labyrinth celebrates 20th anniversary with re-releases and new books
Guillermo del Toro’s acclaimed dark fantasy film, Pan’s Labyrinth, is celebrating its 20th anniversary with a major theatrical re-release and new commemorative publications.
In Mexico, the film will return to over 300 Cinépolis theaters starting October 15, 2026. The re-release features a 4K 2D restoration and a frame-by-frame 3D conversion, both personally supervised by del Toro. The technical update utilizes the original 35mm negative and includes a new sound mix, notably avoiding the use of artificial intelligence in the restoration process. In the United States, the re-release is scheduled for October 9, 2026.
To mark the milestone, Insight Editions is releasing two special books: “Pan’s Labyrinth: The Complete Screenplay” and a 20th-anniversary edition of “Inside the Creation of a Modern Fairy Tale.” The latter, developed with del Toro, includes rare concept art, on-set photography, and interviews with cast and crew. A limited edition of 500 copies will be available, with the first 100 signed by the director.
Del Toro has also shared insights regarding the film's visual design, noting that specific elements, such as the blood-red color palette and mouth-shaped architecture in the Pale Man’s lair, were intentional subconscious choices designed to evoke a sense of voracity.
