Pantanal heatwave triggers red alert and wildfire risks in Mato Grosso do Sul

The Pantanal region in Mato Grosso do Sul is facing extreme heat and heightened wildfire risks. Meteorological stations in Ladário and Corumbá have recorded temperatures reaching 43°C, with heat indices climbing as high as 51°C. The National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) has placed the state under a red alert for a heatwave.

Environmental data indicates a rising trend in wildfires; Mato Grosso do Sul recorded 184,800 hectares burned between January and September, representing a nearly 4% increase compared to the same period in 2024. To mitigate these risks, a state decree has suspended all controlled burns since August 1st.

The extreme conditions, characterized by high temperatures and low humidity, are forcing local communities to alter their daily routines, including shifting work hours to avoid peak afternoon heat.
