Pantanal wildfire prevention bill proposes sustainable livestock management

A new legislative proposal, Bill 2973/26, aims to establish the National Policy for Environmental and Productive Security of the Pantanal by recognizing sustainable livestock farming as a tool for wildfire prevention. The bill, authored by Deputy José Medeiros, suggests that controlled cattle grazing helps reduce combustible biomass, such as dry grass, which often fuels large-scale fires.

To implement this policy, rural properties would be required to adopt cattle and buffalo traceability systems, remote sensing monitoring, and integrated registries. The proposal also includes incentives for natural pasture management, the creation of private rural fire brigades, access to specific credit lines, and partnerships with research institutions.

Citing data from the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (Embrapa), the bill refers to cattle as the ‘firefighter of the Pantanal’ due to their role in controlling flammable material. The project must still undergo review by several parliamentary committees, including Environment, Agriculture, and Constitution and Justice, before proceeding to a vote in the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate.
