Pantelis Diamantakis' Funeral in Rethymno Draws Community Prayer
A funeral service for 25‑year‑old seasonal firefighter Pantelis Diamantakis was held on 30 July 2026 at the Cathedral in the village of Furfurá, Rethymno, Crete. Pantelis and his 58‑year‑old colleague Manolis Stratikas died while battling the Krya Vrysi fire that swept the southern part of the island.
His father, priest Emmanuel Diamantakis, delivered an emotional eulogy, urging the gathered crowd to pray for his son’s soul. He quoted the liturgy, saying, “Ο Κύριος έδωκεν, ο Κύριος αφείλετο· ως τω Κυρίω έδοξεν, ούτω καί εγένετο,” and called on the community to remember Pantelis in their prayers. Thousands of residents, relatives, and fellow firefighters attended, forming a “large assembly” that united in prayer for the fallen firefighter.
The ceremony highlighted Pantelis’ dedication to protecting others, his preference for staying out of the spotlight, and the family’s hope of reunion in the afterlife. The event underscored the deep ties between the local fire service and the community in the wake of the tragic blaze.
