Panteón del Tepeyac serves as resting place for historical figures
The Panteón del Tepeyac in Mexico City serves as a final resting place for numerous prominent historical figures. One notable interment was Lisandro Barillas, the former president of Guatemala, who was assassinated in 1907. His killers, acting on orders from the government of Manuel Estrada Cabrera, were sentenced to death following the crime.
Historically, the cemetery became a preferred site following the closure of the Panteón de San Fernando. It has housed various figures central to Mexico's political history, including General Antonio López de Santa Anna, whose funeral procession was noted for its relative simplicity in 1876.
