PANXEON blood test detects early-stage pancreatic cancer

An international research team, led by the US-based City of Hope, has developed a new liquid biopsy blood test called PANXEON that can detect pancreatic cancer in its early stages. The study, published in Nature Medicine, involved nearly 1,800 participants from the US, Europe, and Asia.

The PANXEON test utilizes artificial intelligence to analyze three specific markers: circulating microRNA, exosomal microRNA, and the CA19-9 protein. In clinical testing, the method correctly identified stage 1 and stage 2 pancreatic cancer in 87% of cases. It also detected high-grade dysplasia, a precancerous condition often referred to as stage 0, in over 64% of cases.

Researchers noted that false-positive rates were 3% in low-risk groups and 16% in high-risk groups. The test is intended for molecular surveillance of individuals already at elevated risk for pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC), rather than general population screening. This approach aims to identify the disease while it is still treatable or even intercept it before it becomes invasive.
