Panxeon blood test detects early-stage pancreatic cancer with 87% accuracy

An international research team, led by City of Hope, has developed a new liquid biopsy blood test called Panxeon that can detect pancreatic cancer in its early stages with high accuracy. Published in Nature Medicine, the study involved approximately 1,800 participants across the US, Europe, and Asia.

The Panxeon test utilizes an artificial intelligence algorithm to analyze three specific biomarkers: circulating microRNA, exosomal microRNA, and the CA 19-9 protein. In clinical testing, the method successfully identified pancreatic cancer in stages 1 and 2 in approximately 87% of cases. It also demonstrated a low false-positive rate of 3% among low-risk individuals.

Beyond cancer detection, the test showed significant promise in identifying high-grade dysplasia—a precancerous condition—in over 64% of patients with high-risk pancreatic cysts. This innovation could potentially transform the management of pancreatic adenocarcinoma, a disease that is often diagnosed too late for effective treatment, as current five-year survival rates remain low.
