Paola launches Saint Francis train tourism initiative

The city of Paola is expanding its religious tourism offerings through the ‘Treno di San Francesco’ (Saint Francis Train) initiative, set to launch on October 25, 2026. This project, developed in collaboration with the Associazione Ferrovie in Calabria, aims to connect the Sanctuary of San Francesco di Paola with the city’s historic center and the Saint’s birthplace via regional rail services.

The initiative seeks to transform traditional pilgrimages into broader cultural experiences by guiding visitors through local history and identity. By integrating rail travel with guided itineraries, the program intends to encourage travelers to explore the wider city beyond the central sanctuary.

Additionally, the community continues to observe religious traditions tied to the region's history. During recent commemorations at the Sanctuary, local religious leaders reflected on the historical protection attributed to San Francesco di Paola, specifically referencing the city's survival during the earthquake of September 8, 1905.
