Paolo Gentiloni criticizes PD over Ukraine and EU defense

Former Italian Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni has criticized the Democratic Party (PD) and other opposition forces, stating they failed a critical political test regarding their stance on Ukraine and European defense. Gentiloni emphasized that the opposition cannot compromise on supporting Ukraine or building a common European defense system.

He advocated for a European defense strategy funded by mechanisms such as the Safe fund and eurobonds, citing the position of Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez. Gentiloni warned that relying solely on external powers for security is a mistake.

Additionally, Gentiloni addressed the recent tensions regarding Ceuta, expressing hope that they do not lead to a political crisis between Italy and Spain. He criticized the Meloni government's response to the situation, describing it as "out of proportion and in violation of the Schengen agreements," and characterized the rise of sovereignist movements as a "concentric attack on Europe."
