Paolo Maldini appointed FIGC technical director and Club Italia president
The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) has confirmed former Milan captain Paolo Maldini as its new technical director and president of Club Italia. The appointment, announced by FIGC president Giovanni Malagò, follows weeks of negotiations in which Maldini signaled his willingness to take on the role, pending the resolution of a few professional matters.
Maldini will head a newly created technical department that will coordinate the senior, youth and women’s national teams and will play a key part in selecting the next head coach. Former teammate Leonardo, who also served as Milan’s sporting director, has been named advisor to the technical director.
The move comes as Italy seeks to rebuild its football structure after missing three consecutive World‑Cup qualifications, a historic low for a four‑time world champion nation. Maldini, who was Milan’s technical director from 2019‑2023 and a celebrated former defender, is expected to bring continuity and credibility to the federation’s long‑term project.
