Paolo Maura: Commemorating the 315th anniversary of the Sicilian poet's death

The 315th anniversary of the death of Paolo Maura, a prominent Sicilian poet, is being observed. Maura passed away in Mineo on September 24, 1711, leaving a significant legacy in Sicilian satirical and burlesque poetry.

Known for his sharp and witty verses, Maura used his work to critique the hypocrisies of the powerful, the vices of the clergy, and the social injustices of the 17th century. His life was marked by dramatic events, including a forbidden romance with a member of the Maniscalco family that led to his imprisonment in Piazza Armerina and the Vicaria in Palermo.

Following his release and subsequent marriage to Doralice Limoli, Maura spent his later years in relative isolation at his estate in Camuti. This location is traditionally associated with the ‘Pietra della Poesia’, a legendary gathering place for Sicilian poets.
