Paolo Messa challenges Western declinism in new book

In his new book, ‘L’Occidente è vivo’ (The West is Alive), published by Rubbettino, Paolo Messa challenges the recurring intellectual trend of declinism—the idea that Western civilization is in an irreversible state of decay.

Messa argues against interpreting various crises, such as demographic aging, debt, and international disorder, as a final destiny. He suggests that the perceived fragility of democracies is actually a sign of life, as they openly debate, protest, and expose their own failures. This stands in contrast to authoritarian regimes, which may appear more efficient by concealing their internal cracks and suppressing conflict.
