Paoly Perera Maldonado dies in Quintana Roo highway accident

Paoly Elizabeth Perera Maldonado, the director general of the Instituto Tecnológico Superior de Felipe Carrillo Puerto and former mayor of the municipality, died following a vehicle accident on Monday, August 17. The crash occurred on Federal Highway 307 near the community of Uh May while Perera was traveling toward Chetumal for institutional duties.

Preliminary reports suggest the accident involved a head-on collision, possibly exacerbated by wet asphalt conditions. The driver of the vehicle, Fernando Perera Tuz, sustained critical injuries and was airlifted by helicopter to a hospital in northern Quintana Roo for specialized treatment.

Perera Maldonado was a prominent figure in Quintana Roo politics, having served as the first female mayor of Felipe Carrillo Puerto from 2016 to 2018. Following her political career, she transitioned to academia, leading the local technological institute. Tributes were held in her honor by local authorities, including Quintana Roo Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa, and members of the academic community.
