Papa Giovanni XXIII Hospital designated as Bergamo's aortic surgery center

The Papa Giovanni XXIII Hospital in Bergamo has been designated as the primary reference center for aortic surgery within the province of Bergamo. Under a new organizational model approved by the Lombardy Region, the hospital is categorized in 'Group A', authorizing it to treat the full spectrum of aortic pathologies, including complex cases requiring personalized or branched endoprostheses.

The new regulatory framework, set to take effect on January 1, 2027, centralizes aortic surgery in facilities that meet specific clinical, technological, and organizational requirements. To qualify, centers must perform a minimum of 30 interventions annually. The Papa Giovanni XXIII Hospital significantly exceeds this threshold, having averaged approximately 84 interventions per year between 2023 and 2025.
