Pope's Madrid visit generates up to €120 million for the city’s hospitality sector

The papal visit to Madrid has been assessed as delivering a substantial economic boost to the capital region. Hospitality leaders estimate that the influx of visitors created a direct return of between €90 million and €120 million, benefitting hotels, restaurants, transport and retail.

José Antonio Aparicio, president of Hostelería Madrid, highlighted the event’s contribution to the city’s international image and tourism profile, noting that the sector accounts for about 4.5 % of the regional GDP and employs roughly 222,000 salaried workers. The visit also served as a stress test for the city’s capacity to host large‑scale international events.

Industry data show the hospitality sector comprises nearly 30,000 establishments, representing around 5 % of Madrid’s business fabric. The estimated revenue uplift underscores the sector’s resilience and its role in driving regional economic activity.
