Papar waters receive 90 artificial reef modules to boost fisheries

The Malaysian Fisheries Development Authority (LKIM) has deployed 90 Sea Fish Farm (LIDL) modules, also known as artificial reefs, in the waters of Papar, Sabah. The project is funded by a RM1.5 million allocation from PETRONAS as part of the Sabah Oil & Gas Terminal (SOGT) Restoration Programme.

The modules are distributed across three strategic locations: Kampung Kuala, Kampung Pengalat Besar, and Kampung Beringgis, with 30 units placed at each site. The deployment includes various types of modules designed for fish, squid, and lobster habitats.

The initiative aims to mitigate the impact of SOGT operations on fishing zones and support approximately 500 local fishermen. It is expected to increase daily landings and income for the community by 20 to 30 percent by providing protected breeding grounds and productive fishing areas. Additionally, the sites hold potential for future development as recreational fishing zones.
