Papardo Hospital microbiology department reorganization sparks political inquiry

Regional deputy Matteo Sciotto has filed an urgent inquiry regarding the decision by Papardo Hospital in Messina to suppress its Microbiology and Virology department. According to a September 3 resolution, the hospital intends to transform the existing structure into a different organizational unit, with notices for new assignments reportedly issued just 13 days later.

Sciotto argues that the department provides an essential H24 service and is the only facility in the province of Messina capable of performing molecular tests for sepsis within a 24-hour window. The unit also serves as a regional reference center for AIDS, works to combat antibiotic resistance, and supports oncology patients.

The deputy raised concerns regarding the legality and procedure of the decision, noting that the hospital has been without a Medical Director since March and that the resolution appears to lack input from the Board of Directors, the Health Council, or trade unions. Furthermore, the service is reportedly already facing staff shortages, including two missing doctors and one technician.
