Pape Alé Niang defends Serigne Moustapha Sy amid social media criticism

Pape Alé Niang, the Director General of RTS, has publicly defended religious leader Serigne Moustapha Sy following a wave of criticism against him on social media. Niang called for recognition of the Moustarchidines leader, urging the public not to forget Sy's positions during previous periods of political instability in Senegal.

Niang described Sy as an “engaged and constant” figure whose actions, both public and discreet, demonstrated support for those facing injustices under the previous political system. He emphasized the importance of political memory, stating, “We must not have a short memory,” and argued that periods of crisis serve to reveal the true convictions and constancy of individuals.

This defense follows similar calls for restraint from other figures, such as the Mayor of Keur Massar, Bilal Diatta, who had previously asked Pastef militants to cease their attacks against the religious guide. The debate highlights the ongoing tension between religious figures and the political class in Senegal.
