Monk arrested for attempted murder at Cyprus monastery

A 51-year-old Romanian monk has been arrested and placed under six-day detention following an alleged stabbing incident at the Agios Neophytos Monastery in Paphos, Cyprus. The attack occurred on Friday, August 7, after a delegation of priests and church officials visited the monk to request that he vacate his cell and leave the monastery.

Investigators believe the monk, who had been suspended from clerical duties, targeted Abbot Leontios during a confrontation regarding the keys to the premises. The suspect allegedly used a box cutter to attack a 53-year-old monastery technician, causing injuries to his throat and hand, and a 27-year-old monk who intervened to stop the attack, resulting in a hand injury.

The victims were treated at Paphos General Hospital, with the technician requiring stitches and hospitalization while the younger monk was released after receiving first aid. The suspect faces multiple serious charges, including attempted murder, causing grievous bodily harm, wounding, and illegal possession of an offensive weapon.

The monastery stated that the dispute stemmed from the monk's long-standing refusal to vacate a room previously occupied by his late father. Police are continuing their investigation, with dozens of additional statements expected as part of the ongoing inquiry.
