Papua Barat Daya government and legislature agree to discuss eight regional regulations

The West Papua Southwest Provincial Government and the Regional People's Representative Council (DPRP PBD) have reached an agreement to proceed with the discussion of eight non-APBD regional regulation drafts (Raperda) for 2026. The legislative body approved moving these drafts to the next stage of deliberation during a plenary session.

The eight drafts include two special regional regulations (Raperdasus) focused on the protection and empowerment of Indigenous Papuans (OAP) and the recognition of customary law communities and territories. The remaining six provincial regulations (Raperdasi) cover topics such as the empowerment of Indigenous Papuan businesses in procurement, population management, public information disclosure, corporate social and environmental responsibility, regional symbols, and the 2026–2035 regional energy plan.

While the joint factions approved the progression of these regulations, they emphasized the need for substantive improvements, legal harmonization, and the incorporation of public aspirations to ensure the resulting laws effectively serve the community.
