Papua infrastructure development faces regulatory hurdles

Velix Vernando Wanggai, Chairman of the Executive Committee for the Acceleration of Papua Special Autonomy Development (KPEP Otsus), has identified regulatory bottlenecks as a primary obstacle to infrastructure development in Papua. During a coordination meeting in Jayapura, Wanggai emphasized that Papua’s unique geography requires more flexible regulatory approaches and funding support compared to other regions.

Wanggai also highlighted the need for improved coordination between central and local governments. He noted that infrastructure projects, such as road construction connecting regional centers to villages, must be integrated with local government planning rather than being handled in a purely sectoral manner.
