Papua New Guinea agriculture faces production decline and climate challenges

Papua New Guinea is facing a long-term decline in agricultural production that has persisted for over two decades. While various government interventions and funding from the World Bank and International Finance Corporation have been implemented between 2010 and 2025, experts suggest that a return to commercial-scale production is necessary to reverse the trend.

Historically, the sector was supported by a robust plantation system and semi-commercial farms. In contrast, current challenges include the impact of El Niño and prolonged droughts. To address these issues and promote resilience, the 70th Agriculture Festival is being held to educate farmers on sustainable practices, improved water management, and livestock care to protect livelihoods and food security.
