Papua New Guinea celebrates linguistic diversity and financial progress

Papua New Guinea is highlighting its immense cultural and linguistic diversity through various initiatives. Papua New Guinea Language Week, held from September 6-12, focuses on the theme of preserving, revitalizing, and promoting Indigenous languages and culture. The nation is home to over 800 living languages, reflecting a deep heritage of diverse identities.

Scholar Julia Mage’au Gray, a doctoral candidate at the University of Auckland, emphasizes the importance of Indigenous knowledge systems. Her research explores how cultural knowledge remains a living, adaptive practice that can be maintained through embodied research methods.

In the realm of economic development, the Alliance for Financial Inclusion (AFI) notes significant progress in Papua New Guinea’s financial sector. The country has reached over 4.75 million active bank accounts and established more than 19,000 access points. Efforts are currently focused on the National Payment System Strategy to create a more connected and interoperable digital financial ecosystem to support sustainable development.
