Papua police intensify anti‑drug operations amid border trafficking

The Drug Investigation Directorate of the Papua Police announced renewed efforts to combat narcotics distribution in the region ahead of International Anti‑Drug Day 2026. Director Alfian emphasised a commitment to protect teenagers, stating, “Kami tetap berkomitmen memberantas tindak pidana narkotika yang ada di Papua, terutama demi melindungi remaja sebagai generasi penerus bangsa.”

Authorities are targeting smuggling routes that use parcel‑delivery services, strengthening cooperation with logistics companies to flag suspicious shipments. The most prevalent substance remains cannabis, largely entering from neighboring Papua New Guinea due to the porous border. Police pledged to boost border surveillance and collaborate with local communities to report and dismantle drug networks.

The initiative aims to reduce drug availability, safeguard youth, and curb illicit profit channels throughout Papua.
