Paraíba Public Ministry investigates water pollution in João Pessoa

The Public Ministry of Paraíba (MPPB) has opened a civil inquiry to investigate potential water pollution in the Lagoa do Parque Três Lagoas, located in the Jardim Veneza neighborhood of João Pessoa.

Technical reports from the João Pessoa Secretariat of Environment (SEMAM) and the Superintendency of Environmental Administration (SUDEMA) identified irregular discharges of industrial effluents into a storm drain. Observations included changes in water color, sewage odors, and the presence of oily residues. SUDEMA pointed to Iane Indústria de Alimentos as the potentially responsible party, resulting in two infraction notices and an embargo, which was later lifted after the company implemented corrective measures.

The inquiry aims to determine if the pollution has fully ceased, assess the extent of the environmental damage, and verify if the lagoon is being properly recovered. The MPPB is also seeking information from SEMAM and the Paraíba Water and Sewage Company (CAGEPA) to identify any other potential sources of contamination.
