João Pessoa population growth exceeds national average

João Pessoa is experiencing significant population growth, outpacing the national average. According to IBGE estimates, the Paraíba capital reached 906,093 inhabitants as of July 1, 2026, representing a 0.94% annual increase. This growth rate is more than double the national average of 0.37% and exceeds that of other Northeastern capitals such as Aracaju, Teresina, and Fortaleza.

Economic officials note that this demographic expansion strengthens the city's position as a regional development hub. João Bosco, Secretary of Economic Development and Labor, stated that the growing population expands the consumer market and increases demand for services, commerce, and housing. The city accounts for approximately 46% of the population increase in the state of Paraíba.

Complementing this growth, the state of Paraíba has maintained a positive balance in formal job creation for five consecutive months. In July, the state generated a net gain of 2,307 jobs, with the industrial sector leading the expansion. Additionally, several municipalities in Paraíba are currently conducting public service examinations (concursos) to fill over 1,400 vacancies across various professional levels.
