Paracetamol overdose risks liver failure and death
Paracetamol is a widely used, over-the-counter medication for pain and fever, but excessive consumption poses severe health risks. In Europe, paracetamol overdose is a leading cause of acute liver failure.
Overdoses can occur intentionally or accidentally. Accidental toxicity often results from taking multiple medications simultaneously—such as combining a standard painkiller with a cold or flu remedy—without realizing both contain paracetamol. Experts advise checking ingredient lists and adhering strictly to recommended dosages.
For healthy adults, a typical single dose ranges from 500 to 1,000 milligrams, with a maximum daily limit of 4,000 milligrams. Health complications can arise at doses around 7,000 milligrams per day, and a single-day intake of 10 grams can be fatal if not treated immediately. For children, dosage must be determined by age and body weight.
