Paracetamol use during pregnancy linked to smaller reproductive organs in female offspring
New research published in the journal Human Reproduction Open suggests a link between prenatal paracetamol exposure and reduced reproductive organ size in female offspring. A study conducted in Denmark observed that female fetuses exposed to the medication—known as acetaminophen in the United States—showed signs of smaller ovaries and uteruses compared to unexposed counterparts.
The findings indicate that the specific effects may depend on the timing of exposure during pregnancy. In a separate group of girls followed into their teenage years, researchers observed similar patterns, including smaller uteruses at puberty and smaller ovaries during adolescence. Higher levels of the drug in maternal urine were also associated with smaller reproductive organs.
While these results mirror previous animal studies, researchers emphasize that this is one of the first human studies to investigate these specific links. Experts caution against drawing definitive conclusions regarding long-term fertility, noting that smaller organ dimensions do not automatically confirm reduced reproductive capacity. Further research is required to establish firm guidance for healthcare providers and pregnant women, who have long been advised that paracetamol is a safe option for pain and fever management.
