Paracetamol use linked to increased blood pressure
Research from the University of Edinburgh suggests that regular high doses of paracetamol, also known as acetaminophen, may increase blood pressure. While paracetamol is often recommended as a safer alternative to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) for individuals with cardiovascular concerns, this study indicates it may still impact the cardiovascular system.
The study involved 110 adults with a history of hypertension. Participants were assigned to take either a placebo or a four-gram daily dose of paracetamol—a common maximum daily dose—for two-week periods. The results showed an increase in both systolic and diastolic blood pressure levels, with the magnitude of the increase being similar to that observed with some NSAIDs.
