India designates four major ports as Mega Ports
The Indian government has officially designated four major maritime gateways as ‘Mega Ports’ under the Indian Ports Act, 2025. The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways issued the notification following an evaluation of the ports' structural and operational criteria.
The designated ports include Deendayal Port (Kandla) and Mundra Port in Gujarat, Jawaharlal Nehru Port (Nhava Sheva) in Maharashtra, and Paradip Port in Odisha. Notably, Paradip Port is the only port on India’s eastern coast to receive this status.
While Deendayal, Jawaharlal Nehru, and Paradip are classified as major ports, Mundra Port is categorized as a port other than a major port. This new designation is intended to support the development of high-capacity maritime gateways, enhance infrastructure, and improve the efficiency of India’s logistics and international trade ecosystems.
