Paradox Interactive faces backlash over Atatürk profile picture ban
A controversy has erupted within the official Discord server of the strategy game Hearts of Iron IV, developed by Paradox Interactive, following the ban of a Turkish player for using a portrait of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk as a profile picture.
According to moderation responses shared by the user during a ban appeal, Atatürk was classified as a “controversial figure” who lived during or after the game's historical period. The moderator stated that real-life images of such figures are not permitted to prevent potential aggression and discussions regarding sensitive historical events. The moderation team further cited Atatürk’s membership in the Committee of Union and Progress during the period of the Armenian genocide as a reason for the restriction.
The decision has triggered a significant backlash from the Turkish gaming community. On the Steam platform, the game has been hit by a wave of negative reviews, with the ratio of positive comments declining rapidly over the last 30 days. Users have accused Paradox Interactive of discrimination, and the controversy has spread across various social media platforms. As of the latest reports, Paradox Interactive has not issued an official statement regarding the incident.
