Tatra Mountains and Silesian roads see rise in fatal accidents
A series of fatal and serious accidents has been reported in the Tatra Mountains and on Silesian roads during the early autumn season. In the Tatras, a weekend of severe incidents resulted in at least one death following a fall at Zawrat and several others critically injured due to slips on hard, icy snow. TOPR rescuers conducted numerous operations at locations including Kozia Przełęcz, Żleb Kulczyńskiego, and Rysy. Rescuers warn that sunny weather at lower elevations can create a false sense of security, as high-altitude conditions remain dangerous with frozen snow and steep, icy slopes. They emphasize that crampons are insufficient for high-mountain terrain and urge hikers to carry proper winter equipment.
Separately, in the Silesia region, police reported 41 accidents during the first eight days of autumn, resulting in four deaths and 47 injuries. Authorities noted that favorable driving conditions often lead to decreased concentration. They also highlighted an increase in pedestrian accidents near crossings and advised the use of reflective elements to improve visibility during the shorter autumn days.
