Paraguay and Argentina Advance Yacyretá Aña Cuá Hydropower Expansion

The binational Yacyretá Entity is machining the Aña Cuá branch of the Yacyretá hydroelectric complex to install three Kaplan turbines with a combined capacity of about 270 MW, raising the plant’s output by roughly 10 % for Paraguay and Argentina. Civil works have reached about 40‑50 % completion, while electromechanical installations are around 75‑76 % finished, giving the overall project a progress rating between 45 % and 76 % according to recent inspections. Around 800 workers are on site and the investment totals close to US$600 million. The first turbine is slated for operation in 2028, with all three expected to be running by the end of 2029. The upgrade will better use the ecological flow of the Paraná River and increase renewable electricity availability for both countries.
