Paraguay and Taiwan celebrate National Day and diplomatic ties

Paraguay and Taiwan are commemorating Taiwan’s National Day, traditionally known as ‘Double Ten,’ which marks the anniversary of the 1911 Wuchang Revolution. A solemn ceremony, including a floral offering, is scheduled to take place at the National Pantheon of Heroes in Asunción.

The event highlights the 69 years of uninterrupted diplomatic relations between the two nations, established on July 12, 1957. Paraguay remains the only country in South America to maintain official diplomatic ties with Taiwan.

Key areas of bilateral cooperation include economic, agricultural, educational, and social initiatives. Notable projects include the ‘Che Tapýi’ social housing program, the establishment of the Taiwan-Paraguay Polytechnic University (UPTP), and various scholarship programs for youth. Former President Horacio Cartes, who maintained close ties with Taiwan during his administration, also reaffirmed the importance of mutual respect and solidarity in the bilateral relationship.
