Paraguay and United States sign security and anti-drug cooperation agreements
The governments of Paraguay and the United States have formalized bilateral agreements to strengthen border security and combat transnational organized crime. These measures focus on enhancing aerial surveillance and improving migration controls.
Under the new agreements, the two nations will implement procedures for the interception of civil aircraft to combat drug trafficking. This includes the exchange of strategic intelligence, radar data, and technical assistance to monitor vulnerable areas such as the Chaco region.
To bolster border security, the United States will provide the Personal Identification Secure Comparison and Evaluation System (PISCES). This advanced biometric technology will allow Paraguayan authorities to process fingerprints, facial images, and biographical data in real time at points of entry.
These agreements follow a visit to Paraguay by U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau and a subsequent official trip by Paraguayan President Santiago Peña to Washington D.C. to meet with government officials and private sector representatives.
