Paraguay-Argentina River Bridge and Hydrovía Projects Move Forward

Local officials in Paraguay and Argentina say a new bridge over the Paraguay River will link Humaitá in Paraguay’s Ñeembucú department with Las Palmas in Argentina’s Chaco province. Mayor Víctor Armella called the work “emblematic for Paraguay and Argentina,” stressing its potential to boost trade, logistics, tourism and regional development and to strengthen Mercosur corridors.

At the same time, Argentina’s government is finalising a 25‑year concession for the drag‑and‑maintenance of the main navigation route of the Paraná‑Paraguay Hydrovía. Industry groups are urging a cabotage law reform to allow additional cargo from the north‑eastern provinces, Paraguay and nearby Brazilian zones to use the waterway, which could cut transport costs by 13‑15 % and increase the size of vessels that can navigate the route.

Both initiatives aim to improve cross‑border connectivity, lower logistics costs and stimulate economic activity in the Río de la Plata basin.
