Paraguay authorities investigate death of 5-year-old indigenous girl
Authorities in the Abaí district of Caazapá, Paraguay, are investigating the death of a 5-year-old indigenous girl found dead in her home in the Cerrito community. Preliminary forensic examinations suggest the cause of death was mechanical asphyxia due to strangulation, with evidence indicating probable sexual abuse.
Two men have been detained and charged as primary suspects: 18-year-old Rodrigo Díaz Galeano, the victim's brother, and 20-year-old Ariel Duarte. Prosecutors noted suspicious behavior from the brother, including early bathing and the handing over of specific clothing items. Police have seized garments for forensic testing to confirm or rule out sexual assault.
Prosecutor Carlos Mercado stated that DNA samples will be taken from both the victim and the suspects for comparison. The victim's body has been transferred to the judicial morgue in Asunción for a detailed autopsy. Investigators are also reviewing the actions of the victim's mother, who was reportedly attending a social event at the time of the incident.
