Paraguay authorities seize 30 war rifles destined for Brazil

Authorities in Pedro Juan Caballero, Paraguay, seized 30 CETME caliber 7.62 war rifles during an operation conducted by the National Anti-Drug Secretariat (SENAD) and the Public Ministry. The weapons, which are of Spanish manufacture, were found hidden under food bags in a garage. Two brothers were detained during the raid.

Investigators believe the rifles were part of an international trafficking route. The shipment was reportedly being assembled in Paraguay after being imported in pieces via courier services, disguised as household appliances, spare parts, or clothing to evade customs. Officials identified Spain as the likely origin, the United States as a transit point, and Brazil as the intended final destination for the arsenal.

The estimated value of the seized weaponry ranges between 2.1 billion and 2.7 billion Guaraníes. General Melanio Servín noted that the influx of such high-caliber weaponry contributes to the “militarization” of criminal organizations in the region. Some rifles had their serial numbers erased and have been transferred to the General Directorate of War Material (DIGEMABEL) for technical analysis.
