Paraguay faces energy shortages and fuel tender scrutiny

Paraguay is facing significant shifts in its energy and fuel sectors. Energy experts warn that the era of abundant and low-cost electricity is ending as demand grows rapidly. Data indicates that energy requirements reached approximately 29,500 gigawatt-hours in 2025, with a projected increase to 57,500 gigawatt-hours by 2043. Current generation sources from the Itaipú, Yacyretá, and Acaray plants may only meet demand until between 2028 and 2030.

Simultaneously, the state-owned oil company Petropar has launched a tender for aviation fuel supply valued at up to US$24.3 million. The tender, which sets a reference price of approximately US$1.21 per litre, has drawn scrutiny from local media regarding the identity of an undisclosed private partner involved in the operation.
