Paraguay goalkeeper Orlando Gill caps World Cup upset over Germany

Paraguay defeated Germany on penalties to advance to the World Cup 2026 round of 16 after a 1‑1 draw at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts. Julio Enciso opened the scoring in the 42nd minute and Kai Havertz equalised in the 54th. A VAR decision later annulled a German goal, and the match went to extra time before remaining level.

Goalkeeper Orlando Gill, playing his tenth senior international, saved three of six German spot‑kicks and helped the South American side win the shoot‑out 5‑4. Gill, who recently faced criticism after a 4‑1 loss to the United States, dedicated the victory to the 6.5 million Paraguayans and to his nephew Alejandro, who is hospitalized in Paraguay. Coach Gustavo Alfaro praised Gill’s resilience and suggested the performance could boost his club prospects.

The win is being described as one of the tournament’s most memorable upsets, sending Paraguay into the knockout stage while eliminating a traditionally strong German team.
