Paraguay launches national plan to protect traditional gastronomy

The Paraguayan National Secretariat of Culture (SNC) is implementing a national plan to safeguard the country's traditional gastronomy. The initiative aims to preserve ancestral recipes, ingredients, and techniques passed down through generations to protect the nation's culinary identity.

Key actions include the development of a registry for traditional cooking methods and knowledge. The SNC is also working with the National Directorate of Intellectual Property (DINAPI) to establish Denominations of Origin and Geographical Indications to protect local products linked to specific territories and production methods.

In terms of international recognition, the SNC has submitted a candidacy to UNESCO to include 'chipa' on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Additionally, the government has recently declared 'Caña Paraguaya' and 'Cocido Tradicional Paraguayo' as Intangible Cultural Heritage.
