Paraguay Ministry of Education closes over 1,000 university programs

Paraguay’s Ministry of Education and Sciences (MEC) has implemented strict new controls to combat irregularities in higher education. Minister Luis Ramírez announced that more than 1,000 university programs have been definitively closed following new regulatory measures and ongoing inspections.

The crackdown follows the detection of over 100 fake degrees, with more than 500 additional cases currently under suspicion. The Ministry has issued two resolutions stating they will no longer register titles from programs that lack proper accreditation.

Minister Ramírez noted that the oversight began with law degrees, though only 42% of relevant entities have responded to inquiries due to long-standing administrative neglect. The government aims to protect students from dubious educational offerings and intends to refine laws regarding university autonomy to prevent the excessive and unregulated creation of new academic programs.
