Paraguay: President Peña travels to US amid internal party shifts

Paraguayan President Santiago Peña is scheduled to travel to the United States for a series of meetings with the private sector and bilateral discussions with U.S. government authorities. During his visit, Peña will serve as the keynote speaker at a gala organized by the Inter-American Dialogue in Washington.

Domestically, Peña has addressed concerns regarding the stability of the Paraguayan financial system, urging citizens to remain calm and expressing confidence in the Central Bank of Paraguay (BCP) to protect savings and credit access.

Simultaneously, political tensions are rising within the ruling Colorado Party (ANR). Vice President Pedro Alliana and Senator Silvio ‘Beto’ Ovelar have demonstrated political alignment amid a power struggle between the ‘Peñismo’ and ‘Cartismo’ factions. Following the decision by the Honor Colorado movement to not field a candidate for the party leadership, Ovelar is positioning himself for a potential bid to lead the ANR.
