Paraguay President vetoes tax exemption law for fire vehicles
President Santiago Peña has vetoed Law No. 7667/2026, a project intended to grant tax and fee exemptions for the importation of specialized vehicles, such as fire trucks and rescue units, for Paraguay's volunteer and public fire departments.
The Executive branch justified the total veto by stating that the requested tax benefits are already provided for under existing legislation, specifically citing Law No. 6762/2021 and Law No. 5375/2014. The administration argued that enacting the new law would create a legal overlap and duplication of current regulations. This decision follows technical reports from the National Directorate of Tax Revenues (DNIT) and the Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF).
Proponents of the bill aimed to reduce economic and administrative hurdles that often delay or increase the cost of acquiring donated or purchased emergency equipment from abroad. Despite the veto, the Chamber of Deputies has reportedly rejected the Executive's objection.
