IMF warns of rising global debt risks and fiscal instability

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has issued a series of warnings regarding escalating global debt and fiscal vulnerabilities. Analysts project that global public debt will reach 100 percent of global GDP by 2029 or 2030, a level not seen since the period immediately following World War II.

Major economies are facing increased pressure due to rising social, defense, and strategic spending, alongside higher interest rates that absorb a growing share of national budgets. The IMF noted that while the global economy has shown resilience, margins for adjustment are narrowing. Global growth is projected at 3.1 percent in 2026 and 3.4 percent in 2027.

Specific risks were identified in the direct lending market, which is approaching two trillion dollars in volume, potentially creating transmission risks between banks and non-bank financial institutions. Additionally, the G24 warned that developing nations are paying approximately $500 billion more for their debt than developed countries, creating significant barriers to inclusive growth.
