Paraguay ranks among top Latin American nations in hunger reduction

According to a report by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) titled ‘The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World 2026’, Paraguay is among the top four Latin American countries in reducing hunger. Paraguay and Colombia share third place in the region with a 4.1% reduction in subnourishment.

In comparison, Argentina and Mexico recorded reductions of 2.8% and 3.1%, respectively. Globally, hunger decreased for the third consecutive year in 2025, affecting 7.8% of the world population, down from 8.1% in 2024. Despite this progress, the FAO warns that improvements remain fragile and uneven.

In Paraguay, the government under Santiago Peña has implemented social programs to strengthen food security. These include the ‘Hambre Cero en las Escuelas’ (Zero Hunger in Schools) program, which serves over 1,050,000 students, and the Universal Pension for the Elderly.
