Paraguay reports over 1,100 respiratory hospitalizations in four weeks
The Ministry of Health in Paraguay has reported 5,490 consultations for influenza-like illnesses and 1,106 hospitalizations for severe acute respiratory infections during epidemiological weeks 38 to 41. Approximately 16% of those hospitalized required intensive care.
Demographic data shows that adults aged 60 and older account for 27% of hospitalizations, followed by children under 2 years old at 24%, and the 5 to 19 age group at 19%. Rhinovirus has been identified as the predominant virus among hospitalized patients, followed by respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and metapneumovirus. Other circulating viruses include influenza B, parainfluenza, adenovirus, and SARS-CoV-2.
During this four-week period, 22 deaths were confirmed due to respiratory viruses. For the year 2026, the total number of deaths associated with respiratory viruses has reached 257. Health authorities are urging the population to receive annual vaccinations to reduce the risk of severe complications and mortality, particularly among vulnerable groups.
