Paraguay seeks Japanese market entry for eucalyptus wood

Paraguay is working to expand its forestry industry into the Japanese market by seeking certification for its eucalyptus wood. The Ministry of Industry and Commerce (MIC) and the Paraguayan Timber Federation (Fepama) are preparing a test shipment to obtain the Japan Agricultural Standard (JAS) certification.

During the Expo Madera 2026, international experts discussed the potential for Paraguayan eucalyptus to be integrated into Japan’s construction industry, which builds approximately 500,000 wooden-structured homes annually. The wood is considered a competitive alternative due to its structural resistance, low moisture levels, and natural resistance to pests such as termites. The initiative focuses on meeting strict Japanese requirements regarding traceability and Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) criteria.
